Mujeres Atrevidas chronicles the strength and persistence of female low wage, immigrant workers as they fight for their rights through their involvement with Workers Justice Project, a worker center based in Brooklyn.

Synopsis

Mujeres Atrevidas (Bold Women) centers on immigrant women's experiences directly informing this moment in the labor movement. Weaving together moving interviews and vérité footage that tell of their daily working lives and struggles, Mujeres Atrevidas takes the audience through the journey of how these female delivery workers, construction workers, and day laborers find community and empowerment to overcome obstacles and tap into their inner strength to organize for themselves.

Director’s Statement

Through an insightful look at what daily conditions female-identified low-wage gig workers face, Mujeres Atrevidas will illuminate the key role worker centers such as the female-led Workers Justice Project can have in cities and states across the country where new labor policies and standards (such as domestic workers’ bills of rights and higher minimum wages) are being enacted. Ultimately, the film will testify to the ability of these female workers to sustain and improve their lives, as they reflect on questions regarding New York City’s future and its relationship to labor.

Mujeres Atrevidas is funded, in part, by the Taconic Fellowship Grant by Pratt Center for Community Development, the Greater New York Arts Development fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council, and the Puffin Foundation. This film is fiscally sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts.
